State of California Increases The Sales Tax Rate!
As of April 1st the State of California will be increasing the sales tax rate. If your business collects sales tax, now is the time to prepare to collect the additional 1%. If you are in a city or county that has a new voter approved local district tax rate increase effective on April 1, 2009, your overall tax rate increase will be higher.Here are a few places in the bay area that you might need to know:
County of Santa Clara = 9.25%
City of Campbell = 9.5%
Alameda County = 9.75%
City of Santa Cruz = 9.50%
To check the rate amount in your county or city, check the State Board of Equalization's website.
Two April 15th Deadline Reminders:
Extension For Personal Tax Returns:
Can't get your tax return filed by Wednesday, April 15th? Need an extension on your personal return? The IRS will allow taxpayers to receive a 6 month extension to file their tax return by October 15th.
If you owed taxes last year and have about the same income/expenses, I would encourage you to mail in a payment if you are filing an extension. The IRS collects more taxes on penalties and interest than it does on tax alone. Avoid penalties and interest if you can by making a payment.
State Minimum Tax Payment:
For all LLC's and S & C Corporations, remember that your minimum State tax of $800 is due April 15th. This is a prepayment for the 2009 year. If you need assistance or clarification, please call our office.
