Innovate Your Business:
The publisher of Success Magazine, Darren Hardy spoke in the August issue about constantly innovating your business.
What is innovation? To innovate your business means to pursue something better, to improve, streamline, and stay relevant in the marketplace.
He talks about the two biggest mistakes:
1. Innovating the wrong thing
2. Innovating what they think they should, not in response to market needs or customer desire
Experience your business as your customer does. Go to your website, browse, shop, call customer service and ask questions, see how the product shows up to your doorstep and then return the product. Then, do this to 3 of your competitors. And then, do the same to 3 world class large companies. Do you see any improvements you can make? Any holes you need to plug up? Where can your business improve?
Talk to some of your customers, ex-customers; talk to your vendors or your competitors customers about what they observe about your company or other companies in your industry. Have a real discussion about personal experiences. This was a practice that Sam Walton did regularly and was famous for. It worked out for him.
Step back and look around. What sets you apart is to allow yourself to see solutions where others see irritations; see opportunities where others see problems. If you want to stay on top of your game, be in a constant state of change because your competitor will be right behind you.
Make innovation a daily, weekly, monthly discipline. Ask yourself these 3 questions:
1. What should we doing more of?
2. What should we be doing less of?
3. What should we stop doing all together?
Allow creativity to thrive in your company. Be on the look out for complacency. If you aren't improving yourself, your product or business, you'll soon be left behind!
