Use Tax: Collecting an Old Tax in New Ways
The State of California has enacted strict new use tax registration and reporting requirements. Use tax is imposed on the purchaser. Use tax is due when an out-of-state or online retailer does not collect the tax for an item delivered to California. The BOE sent out 180,000 letters informing them. Did you get one? Do you qualify to file?
A business with $100,000 or more in gross receipts that does not currently hold a sellers permit for sales tax, must register with the BOE. They must report and pay by April 15th, 2010. This new law applies to purchases made during 2009.
I recommend that you look at purchases you made with Amazon, eBay and Craigslist. Did you purchase anything online?
