Tips to Reduce Stress

How to Manage Stress During A Crisis

When COVID-19 hit the United States mid-March 2020, our life and work was no longer the same. The way our work interactions changed, team members were suddenly struggling with wearing many different hats—employee, educator, provider, preparer of hundreds of meals, therapist—all at once.

As shelter in place orders continued across America initially for weeks and then turning into months, I knew that I needed to dig deeper to find resources to stay connected with the team, continue to build culture, and keep the team engaged.

Practical Work Ideas

* Break down what you need to do in small chunks, setting a routine

* Clean and organize your office. There is something about a clean office that makes one feel more efficient. (Doesn’t a clean car with a full tank of gas make it drive more efficiently?)

* Set a goal of getting X number of returns done per day, including one complex return per day

* Provide an allowance to cover mental health visits (section 139)

* Under promise, giving yourself an extra day to complete the work; over-deliver by exceeding expectations

* Create your ideal week, adding structure to your day

* Have each person pick a day off each week to decompress and manage stress, with pay

* Over-communicate with your team; check-in with each person weekly and monthly as a group

* Set up a Marco Polo Group with your team (videos)

* In a meeting with your team, ask them to tell you one word that describes how they are feeling today

* Use low cost tools like Kahoot to promote engagement

* Virtual scavenger hunt: Strayboots

* Have each person share something positive in zoom meetings

* Passion project – find a work project that engages each team member

* The Power of Purpose: Story of 3 Bricklayers

* Create a small group of colleagues to share work experiences & glean advice

Practical Personal Ideas

* Do random acts of kindness for those around you
* Exercise, even if it’s as simple as taking a walk around the block to get sunshine
* Turn off the news or disconnect from social media
* Guard your self-talk; talk to yourself in a positive way and stop listening to negative self-talk
* Instead of focusing on the negative, focus on your blessings and opportunities
* Meditation app called Headspace, which offers a free subscription for those who are unemployed
* Focus on abundance rather than scarcity
* Guard your sleep
* Have a sense of humor; laugh; watch videos of puppies
* National suicide prevention lifeline: 800-273-8255
* Take time to find a creative outlet (rock painting, coloring)
* Breathe deeply; sit still for 10 minutes and meditate
* Tapping to reduce stress
*Create a list of affirmations to read daily: Here’s Jack Canfield’s Website on Affirmations!
