You Asked, We Answered

How many hours should bookkeeping take, and is yours worth it?

If bookkeeping is quietly eating a chunk of your month, the real question isn’t just “how long should this take.” It’s whether your hours are worth more than what a bookkeeper would cost. Let’s run that math honestly.

Most owners have never actually added up the hours. It happens in the cracks: an evening here, a Sunday there, a long weekend before taxes. But those hours are real, and they’re some of the most expensive hours in your business, because they’re yours.

How long bookkeeping usually takes

A rough benchmark helps you see where you land. Studies and industry estimates put typical small-business bookkeeping in these ranges:

10–15 hrs / month
Baseline bookkeeping. Straightforward business, modest transaction volume, staying reasonably current.
20–30+ hrs / month
More complex or manual. Higher volume, manual billing, multiple accounts, or catching up after falling behind. That’s 240 to 360+ hours a year.

And it climbs from there if you’re inexperienced (owners without an accounting background often take noticeably longer) or spending time fixing errors, which is one of the biggest hidden time drains of all.

Now the part that matters: what are those hours worth?

Here’s the question almost no one stops to ask. If you’re spending 20, 25, 30 hours a month on your books, what is an hour of your time actually worth in your business, doing the work only you can do? That’s the number that changes everything.

Run your own number

Take your monthly bookkeeping hours, and multiply by what an hour of your time is worth, what you’d bill, or what you’d earn spending that hour on sales, delivery, or growth.

An example: Say you spend 25 hours a month on your books, and your time is worth $100 an hour. That’s $2,500 a month, roughly $30,000 a year, of your own time spent on bookkeeping. Professional bookkeeping would handle it for a fraction of that.

Even at a conservative hourly value, the numbers add up fast, and for most established owners, they add up to far more than a bookkeeper costs.

The honest caveat: this math only works if you’d actually put those reclaimed hours toward higher-value work, or genuinely need the time back for your life. If you enjoy doing your books and have the time to spare, that’s a real answer too. This isn’t about pressure. It’s about counting honestly, because most owners have never run the number at all.
