From My Kitchen Table To A Nationwide Firm
When potential clients tell me they’re frustrated, behind on their bookkeeping, and blindsided every year by a tax bill they can’t afford, I don’t just sympathize. I see my own story in them.
It was January of 1996. My husband had started a business the year before, which made me the default bookkeeper, even though I had no formal training and no idea what I was doing. I locked myself in his office for an entire month trying to pull together financial statements for the tax return. I bought QuickBooks thinking that since it was made by Intuit, it would be intuitive. It was not. I had two choices: give up, or figure it out. I chose to figure it out.
A few years later, our corporate tax preparer told me the financial statements I’d given him were the best he had ever seen from a client. He asked if I’d be interested in training his clients on QuickBooks. That was the confirmation I needed. In 2003, I incorporated AdminBooks out of our home in the Bay Area, got certified in QuickBooks, and became a licensed tax preparer.
Because I lived through that overwhelmed, in-over-my-head feeling, I’m passionate about making sure our clients never have to. The vision was simple from day one: help small business owners actually understand their numbers so they can make better decisions, both in business and in life. I never wanted to be the kind of accountant who showed up once a year with a tax return. I wanted to be a partner.
For years I dreamed of building a fully remote firm so we could serve clients anywhere in the country, without anyone needing to commute or push paper. In 2020, that vision clicked into place, and we’ve been 100% virtual ever since. Today, AdminBooks is a paperless, cloud-based firm serving hundreds of small businesses and entrepreneurial professionals across the United States, using financial statements and tax returns as tools to create real, positive change in our clients’ businesses and lives.
