You Asked, We Answered

DIY bookkeeping or hire a bookkeeper?

Plenty of business owners start out doing their own books, and for some, that’s the right call for a while. The trick is knowing when DIY is genuinely fine and when it’s quietly costing you more than a bookkeeper would. Here’s an honest look at both sides.

When doing your own books makes sense

Let’s be straight: not every business needs to pay for bookkeeping right away. If you’re just starting out or running something simple, DIY can be perfectly reasonable. You likely don’t need to hire anyone yet if most of these are true:

  • You have a low volume of transactions each month.
  • Your books are current, and you’re confident they’re accurate.
  • Bookkeeping takes you very little time and doesn’t cause you stress.
  • You keep business and personal money cleanly separated.

If that’s you, keep at it, and revisit the question as you grow. Our free tools for business owners can help you stay organized in the meantime, and understanding the basics like cash vs. accrual accounting will serve you well whether you DIY or not.

When it’s costing you more than you think

Here’s where DIY quietly turns expensive. The cost usually isn’t obvious, it shows up as hours you could have spent earning, deductions you missed, or decisions you couldn’t make because the numbers weren’t there. It’s worth bringing in a bookkeeper when you notice signs like these:

  • Bookkeeping eats hours you’d rather spend running your business.
  • You’re behind, or you avoid your books until they pile up.
  • You’re not confident your numbers are right.
  • Tax season is a scramble instead of a non-event.
  • Your business is growing, and the books are getting more complex.

At that point, a bookkeeper usually pays for itself, in time you get back, in deductions you stop missing, and in the peace of mind of knowing your numbers are right. That’s the experience our clients describe most often.

The real comparison: cost vs. value

DIY bookkeeping feels free, but it isn’t. The price is your time and the risk of mistakes. Professional bookkeeping has a clear dollar cost, but it buys back your hours and protects you from costly errors. The honest question isn’t “which is cheaper?”, it’s “which actually costs me less once I count my time?”

For a lot of owners, once they add up the hours they spend (or avoid spending) on the books, outsourcing comes out ahead. Already behind? That’s common, and fixable.

If the reason you’re considering help is that your books are a mess or months behind, you’re in good company, it’s one of the most common ways people first come to us. We can clean up a messy QuickBooks Online file or catch up missing months, then keep you current from there.

The bottom line

Doing your own bookkeeping is a fine starting point, and for a simple, low-volume business it can stay that way. But the moment it starts costing you time, accuracy, or sleep, that’s the signal it’s earning its keep to hand off. The goal isn’t to do your books yourself or to pay someone, it’s to have books you can trust with the least cost to you overall.
